Which rug? The merits of choosing handmade rugs

When renovators began ripping up carpet to find floorboards underneath hidden that were perfectly preserved for half a century, we entered a new paradigm of style for the Aussie home and the revival of the rug.

Gone are the days of the blanketing effect of wall to wall shagpile dominating a room and dictating the design of an entire room. The wall and floor pink carpeted bathroom is well and truly dead and buried. And yes, it was a thing in the 70’s along with the chocolate brown living room in which I explored as a toddler.

Now, beautifully polished natural timbers provide the perfect canvas for a new hero. Enter the rug. There are rugs, and then there are handmade rugs. The two are very different aesthetically and going with the latter will help you avoid a 70’s inspired style disaster.

Works of art

“Rugs change the look and mood of any room,” Vikram Maghu CEO of Veeraa international said. Veeraa is an Aussie company specialising in importing unique, handmade rugs from developing countries.

“There are many practical benefits to having a rug, from warming the home to reducing the noise and protecting the floor. A rug is essential for those with hard floors as it will help to soften the space and add much needed warmth.”

Handmade rugs are like works of art, each is unique.

“The individuality of each item is what gives it character. Handmade products have a unique identity that requires being appreciated as part of the style,” Mr Maghu said.

The coming trend this year will be handmade rugs from natural fibre, go for lighter and soothing colours. Avoid dark and bright colours.

Also check with the supplier if the rug is fair trade and that no child labour has been used in any stage of the rug making. Buying a handmade rug from overseas is also an excellent way to support weavers, recognising their craft and helping with their income.

Before buying a rug measure the dimensions of your room, allow enough room for door openings. To make a room look more connected go for a larger rug.
